Last week, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published that Ukraine was elected to the Executive Council of UN Women 2022-2024. In addition to this, the country was re-elected for terms in three more executive boards of different UN bodies.
UN Women (United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women) is a body established in 2010. They focus on increasing equality but also work on empowering females around the world in all areas of life. The available data show that Ukraine was not represented in their Council since 2011/2013.
The Ukrainian officials and diplomats agree that this shows the state’s decisiveness to work their way to gender equality, encouraging women to enter traditionally male professions and political life in the country. Another significant topic is achieving peace and safety, especially domestic violence and discrimination.
The UN chose Ukraine as one of the countries within its focus. They have signed a Partnership Framework 2018-2022 worth $667 million— supporting projects aimed at ending hunger and poverty, providing equality and education, as well as environmental projects and efforts. A total of thirty countries were chosen for this form of cooperation.
In addition to this, as we’ve mentioned, Ukraine was re-elected for three-year terms in UNDP (United Nations Development Program), UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services), and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund). This kind of intensive activity ensures the successful implementation of projects under the Partnership Framework.
All involved parties agree that the activity of UN agencies will be of crucial significance for overcoming the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. It will also help place the country on a track of democratic governance, green tech, increasing employment, and reaching sustainable economic growth.
