What is sologamy? When you love yourself so much you organize a wedding ceremony to marry yourself. While there’s no legal standpoint about this act, the trend is gaining momentum as an act of self-love.
The first recorded self-marriage took place in 1993 when a US dental hygienist married herself during a ceremony attended by 75 people. She recited vows to herself to honor herself for better or for worse.
Last year, the world recorded the first self-divorce. A 33-year-old model in Brazil decided to divorce herself after three months because she fell in love with another person.
As there are no rules to sologamy, individuals are free to organize everything according to their wishes and liking. Today, there are even agencies that do consulting services and full organization of self-weddings.
The pop culture adopted sologamy quite early, as self-marriages were shown in numerous popular series. Many believe that Carrie Bradshaw popularized the concept when she married herself in a 2003 episode of Sex and the City.
However, experts believe that this could be an important trend in a wider societal context, especially important for emancipation and gender equality. It’s symbolic of women finally being able to provide for themselves and be independent enough to go through life on their own.
